Celine bassman

Performers: Celine Bassman, Pema Cunnyngham-Mansfield, Justine Florence, Mary Catherine Matthews, Syd Thiebaut

Once upon a time there was a little tyke named blank. From the start she was destined to be a total girlbossbitch doesn't take shit from anyone. Now here's a story that feels like a story. It goes like GUT!

Composer: Kathryn Spencer

Song arrangements: Sarah Linsly

Set Designer: Noah Bassman

Photographer: Dinah Day-Booth

Celine Bassman is a Queens native, writer, and multidisciplinary dance artist. Fundamental to Celine's work is an understanding that everyday life is a site for play and choreographic inquiry. Her work engages with spatial patterns, repetition, and pedestrian choreographed phrase work to attend to how the dancing body can explore questions of gender, performance, and agency. She has shown work at Supr Omen, the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought, Green Lung Studio, Arts on Site, Green Space, and at Neville Dance Theater’s “On Pointe” Dance Festival. Celine earned her BA in dance and feminist, gender, & sexuality studies from Wesleyan University.

Noah Bassman (they/them) is a Queens based artist and urban planner. They use their art practice to envision a future city with a queer public and a better relationship between the built and natural environment.

Dinah Day-Booth is currently a student at Hunter College majoring in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography. She is in her senior year, and is continuing to build a portfolio composed of photographic prints and both acrylic and oil paintings. Her work in photography is grounded in a deep appreciation of the process and material of photographic film and its ability to visually and practically explore themes of identity, replication, relationships, and mystery. Formally, she is drawn to movement and shape and their connection with one's understanding of the body in a physical space.

Justine Florence has recently performed works by Pei Barth Wu, Mirage Auto Depot, Jacqulyn Buglisi, Merce Cunningham, Nicole Schemansky, among others; and is currently in process with Celine Bassman, Frances Rose Heintzelman, and Leah Fournier. Justine creates spatially motivated work with a feral flare.

Pema Cunnyngham-Mansfield is a multidisciplinary dance artist and movement researcher based in NYC. Pema completed her BA in dance and environmental studies at Wesleyan University where she received High Honors for her Dance Thesis researching contact improvisation and multi-media performance art as a means to put environmental theory into practice. Since completing her BA in 2025, Pema has performed
professionally and presented work throughout New York City and the Northeast United States at Green Space, Arts on Site, Green Lung Studio, and the School for Contemporary Dance and Thought. Pema is also the founder and facilitator at PB&Jam Collective, a weekly open improvisation space that works with dancers and musicians to research cross-disciplinary experimental movement and sound.

Mary Catherine Matthews is from Sumter, SC, based now in NYC. She improvises and performs with friends, like Celine! MC also devises and performs contemporary dance theater for young audience with Treehouse Shakers. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BARSC in “Dance, Wellness, and Community Health.”

Kathryn Spencer is a musician-programmer using live production software to make instinctual compositions. She’s based in New York.

Syd Thiebaut is a dance artist from Cadillac, Michigan. They graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in 2021. In 2024, they relocated to New York, where they currently work as a freelance dancer and choreographer. They recently premiered their first evening length work in Green Lung’s DOUBLES series.

About Green Lung Studio

Green Lung Studio was built by two artists who wanted a place to try things—loudly, quietly, imperfectly. Not a venue. Not a theater. A playground. A lab. A home. We know what it’s like to scrape by in a city that forgets its artists. So we made the kind of space we always needed—a place to test ideas. Today Green Lung Studio is ran by a group of close friends and volunteers looking to protect independent New York art spirit and culture.

Green Lung Studio has year round dance, music, cinema and more. Stay up to date at greenlungstudio.com or @greenlungstudio on Instagram.
